RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
