Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
