Chelsea Boss Maresca Dismisses Man City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has labelled recent reports connecting him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the persistent speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in June 2024, has a contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a possible extension option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.
Strain After Previous Remarks
Maresca's most recent statement come in the wake of he described a previous two-day spell as his "worst" since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had fueled considerable speculation of a potential rift between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton press conference, no."
The manager did confirm he would definitely stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on the fans to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly available for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an open wound that continues to create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the situation in the open, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has become notably strained, leading to concerns it could impact what has up to now been a decent beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have reached the League Cup last four, and can secure a favourable European position with good performances in their final matches.
The lingering uncertainty is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might begin to affect a team that was beginning to look settled.
